To quote a couple chemist friends of mine “batteries are hard. A lot of really smart people with almost unlimmited financial backing have been working on the battery problem for 50 years now and have made relatively little progress...”
That is to say for all the hype of electric transportation, the smart money should know it’s likely only a niche stepping stone to whatever is next.

You would sure think so.
Face it, the world consumes about a billion cell phones, laptops and tablets a year... and batteries are only getting better at the rate of 4% per year, even with massive demand and massive investment.
I’m curious to see what GigaPromises Musk is making this time-- but it’s very unlikely to change the outcome. 8000 laptop batteries in a tube is just a very crude way to solve this problem.

I’m hoping there’s some big break in h ydrogen production that makes fuel cells more v iable. Most commercially available hydrogen is actually a by-product of fossil fuel production so it's not clean at all.

I think the problem really lies with the cells- with hydrogen being the smallest atom the cells are extremely pricey
